Immunization programs are essential to address mortality and morbidity associated with vaccine-preventable diseases. A case in point is hepatitis B, which is associated with cirrhosis and liver cancer. To increase hepatitis B vaccinations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shifted from recommending vaccination based on risk factors to recommending universal vaccination of adults between the ages of 19 and 59.
