It's been roughly 15 years since the United States began the somewhat concerted, somewhat coordinated transition from a fee-for-service to a value-based healthcare system. So, how is that transition progressing? Truthfully, not very well.
In the 2022 HealthLeaders Value-Based Readiness survey, 112 healthcare executives and clinical leaders self-reported mostly tepid, toe-in-the-water adoption of value-based care (VBC). Only one-quarter of respondents rated their overall preparedness for VBC as "very strong," while more than 30% rated their preparedness as "somewhat weak" or "very weak," and almost half said their VBC status was "somewhat strong."
